This is a historic photograph taken by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1946, showing the first ever image of the Earth from space. The picture was taken from an altitude of 65,000 feet, and shows the Earth in its entirety, from the North Pole to the South Pole

Photography and other imagery of planet Earth from outer space started in the 1940s. Initially the images were taken from rockets in suborbital flight, subsequently from satellites around Earth, and eventually from spacecraft beyond Earth's orbit.
